Bang Lang Stork Garden

Located 52 kilometers from the center of Can Tho City, Bang Lang Stork Garden in Binh Thoi Hamlet, Thot Not District is one of the Mekong Delta’s best stork sanctuaries. Off the beaten track, the garden is sure worth your time if you still looking for that hidden charm of Mekong Delta.

The garden was spontaneously established and then sustained by a local man, who was referred as Mr. Bay Co (Co is Vietnamese for stork) since 1983. Since then, Bang Lang garden has gradually been expanded with the current area of 12.500 m2 and the number of storks ranges from 100.000 – 150.000 of more than 20 species of stork.

Bang Lang – queen of the flowers – is obviously showed off through its English name Queen’s Grape-myrtle. This stork garden got the name “Bang Lang” as in the past, the road to the sanctuary had been planted with many “Bang Lang”. Although there are not many trees along the road anymore, local people and visitors still call it “Bang Lang Stork Sanctuary” or “Bang Lang Stork Garden”.

Bang Lang Stork Garden is surrounded by immense rice paddies as well as the interlacing canals of Can Tho. Visitor can join a cruise on Hau River, or cycling past the orchards, craft villages and green fields to access the garden. It is a vast area, flood with water under the shady trees. Inside, a watching tower of 3 metres allows visitors to look around the gardens and learn peaceful scenes of the of the Mekong Delta’s countryside, fiddled by the chord of storks. There are various species of storks living at Bang Lang Stork Garden including Cattle Egret, ibis, striated heron, painted stork, etc. Other than storks, there are other species of bird also make their home at Bang Lang Garden such as black-crowned night heron, little cormorant, greater coucal, heron, etc.
