Located on one bank of the Thach Han river, Quang Tri Ancient Citadel was once referred to as the site of bloody battles during the US war. Also, the site was a sacred place where dozens of thousands of Vietnamese soldiers sacrificed their lives for the nation independence. Because of carrying certain meanings in the Vietnamese history and contributing to the glorious historical chapter, it now becomes a special hotspot drawing more and more domestic and international tourists to visit.
At the beginning, Quang Tri Ancient Citadel was made of clay by the King Gia Long’s order, but it underwent upgrades during the dynasty of King Minh Mang, so it has been in brick as we see nowadays. Fringed by a moat and having the area of 20 hectares, the site used to be not only a powerful fortress, but also an administrative, economic and political center in the feudal age.
