Mekong Delta Overview
The Mekong Delta, also known as the Western Region (Vietnamese: Mien Tay) or the South-western region (Vietnamese: Tay Nam Bo) is the region in southwestern Vietnam where the Mekong River approaches and empties into the sea through a network of distributaries.
The Mekong River, the world's twelfth longest, flows south for more than 2,000 miles from the Tibetan Plateau, through China, Burma, Laos and Cambodia until it finally reaches Southwest Vietnam. Here it splits into great tributaries that spread out to form the vast and fertile Mekong Delta. This is Vietnam's rice bowl, where the combination of constant tropical temperatures, plentiful water and fertile land enable up to four rice harvests annually. The delta also produces an abundance of exotic fruit: coconut, mango, pineapple, papaya, dragon fruit and the pungent durian in season.
